Turning Your Concrete Into Something Special

One relatively easy and inexpensive way to turn a drab concrete slab, floor, patio or other surface into something sparkling and attractive is with concrete paint.  Though there are various types of concrete floor paint which range from concrete patio paint to concrete pool paint, they can all beautify and protect.

You should consider the surface before launching a concrete paint project.  The concrete surface should usually be a month old or more before applying paint -- the surface should completely cure. If a surface is not completely cured it is unlikely that the paint will properly adhere.

Before applying any paint, the concrete surface should be free of dirt, grease and oil, and any efflorescence. You can do this with some concrete cleaners or, in some cases, a vigorous power wash.

The texture of the surface is of a great deal of importance as well.  To be able to effectively use concrete paint as opposed to a more expensive concrete acid stain, the surface should feel slightly rough as though it were medium sand paper.  To achieve this texture you might need to do some acid etching.  Shot blasting is the preferred contractor technique, but requires special equipment.  After the acid etching is done, thoroughly wash the surface with water, perhaps in power wash fashion.

Now you are ready for painting.  If an impeccable, easy to clean surface is what you are after, you should consider epoxy concrete floor paint.  These are ideal for the garage that doubles as a showplace for vehicles, tools and more.  These paints provide the user with a beautiful, often shiny, protective coat.  Several color choices are available with most manufacturers.

To get an idea how relatively inexpensive it can be to completely transform your garage, for example, with epoxy concrete floor paint, a gallon of Rust-Oleum 1-part epoxy floor paint can cost as little as $30.00.  A gallon of this paint will cover from 300 to 400 square feet.  Behr and Benjamin Moore are two other brands that are of comparable quality and price range.

Generally you can use rollers and brushes to apply your concrete paint.  You should be careful to use a number of thin coats instead of trying to apply one or two thick coats.  Applying a single thick coat can result in a soft or sticky surface.  Be methodical in your application.  That way you are more apt to be pleased with the outcome.
Concrete paint, regardless of the kind of paint to the type of surface, will do wonders on a limited budget.  Nearly everybody is skilled enough to do the job.  So why not beautify and save money at the same time.
